Bible verses for anxiety and peace
When your thoughts will not settle, you do not need a long study. You need a living word you can hold. These verses are for worry, racing nights, and the quiet fear that God is far.
Use this page slowly. Pick one verse. Read it twice. Then pray it back in a single sentence — “This is what I need today.” That is how Scripture becomes prayer instead of a list you feel behind on.
When you need peace in the moment
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
Jesus does not offer a mood. He offers His own peace — different from “everything is fine.” You can pray: Give me the peace that does not depend on my circumstances settling first.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7
Peace here is a guard, not a vibe. Ask God to stand at the door of your mind when thoughts keep pushing in.
When you are afraid
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
The command “do not fear” is attached to a promise: presence, strength, help, being held. Pray the second half if the first half feels impossible.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3
David does not pretend he is never afraid. He prays inside the fear. You can too.
When your mind will not stop
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3
Steadfast does not mean never distracted. It means returning. Each return is a kind of trust.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting is a motion you may repeat. God does not shame you for needing to hand the same thing over again. Care is the reason, not your performance.
When you feel small and overwhelmed
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
Psalm 23:1–3
Lie down. Quiet waters. Refreshment. This is permission to stop striving for a few minutes and let yourself be led.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
Rest is a gift Jesus names. You do not have to earn the invitation.
When night is the hardest
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24
Read one of these before the phone, or instead of it. If sleep still does not come, the verse has still done its work: it has given your night a truer last word than the worry did.
How to pray a verse
- Read it out loud.
- Change “you” to “me” where it fits — You will keep me in peace.
- Name one anxious thing next to it, then sit for thirty seconds without adding more words.
If you want help turning these words into a short daily path, that is the heart of Near to God: scripture matched to the state of your heart, then a prayer you can actually finish. For the practice of praying while anxious, see how to pray when you feel anxious.
